YNW Melly murder trial: Judge rules mistrial after jury fails to return unanimous verdict

Published July 24, 2023 by

Prosecutors likely to pursue retrial

YNW Melly’s murder trial ended on Saturday (July 22) with Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy rulling a mistrial. Per AP News, a 12-member jury failed to return a unanimous verdict following three days of deliberation. The panel had earlier on told the judge that they had reached a deadlock.

The prosecutors are likely to file for a retrial. They had been seeking the death penalty.

Before any mistrial would be declared, the judge would bring the jury in and read the "Allen Charge" that asks them to go back and continue deliberating, etc… AFTER a period of time, if jury still indicates deadlock THEN it would be a mistrial. #YNWMelly #YNWMellyTrial

Melly was being accused of shooting to death his two friends YNW SakChaser and YNW Juvy inside a Jeep they were riding in in 2018. Prosecutors claim Melly and his co-defendant YNW Bortlen then staged a drive-by shooting and drove the bodies of their dead buddies to the hospital.
