Rihanna songwriter reveals first No. 1 hit ‘SOS’ lyrics incorporated 80’s song titles

RiRi’s first No. 1 hit referrenced 80’s lyrics

Rihanna’s very first No. 1 hit “SOS” had elements of titles from 1980’s songs. Evann “Kidd” Borgat, who wrote the 2006 song, revealed that he was inexperienced with writing pop music and had to lift some words from 80’s song titles.

“If you really look at how that song is written, it’s not written by anyone who knows anything about pop music,” he said. “I was going off of instinct. If you look at the verses, they’re crafted with a lot of clever word play and internal rhyme schemes — like a rapper would.

“The whole second verse of that song is ’80s song titles strung together as sentences because I thought it would be clever.”
