Kanye West’s “School Spirit” has no profanity because Aretha Franklin wouldn’t clear her vocal sample if it did

Published June 16, 2020 by

Kanye West‘s “School Spirit”, the 15th track on his 2004 debut studio album The College Dropout, has no profanity in it because Aretha Franklin wouldn’t clear her vocal sample if it did.

Every single song on The College Dropout has profanity except “School Spirit“, the song is edited even on the explicit version of the album. Kanye West’s “School Spirit” sampled Aretha Franklin’s 1970’s “Spirit in the Dark”.

There are uncensored versions of School Spirit available online.
