John Legend Reflects on Kanye West Fallout: “It’s Sad to See His Devolution”

Published August 26, 2025 by

Singer Says He Has No Regrets About Collaborations, But Criticizes Ye’s Descent Into Hate

John Legend has spoken candidly about his complicated relationship with Kanye West, expressing sadness over the rapper’s transformation from an innovative artist into a polarizing figure.

In a recent appearance on Ebro in the Morning, Legend addressed a bizarre insult from West, who claimed the singer “smells like mashed potatoes.” Legend brushed off the comment with humor, saying: “What kind of potatoes? Cheesy, garlic? … All of it makes me sad, though. And it’s not for me, because obviously, I smell great.”

More seriously, Legend reflected on their creative history and what has changed. “He was full of so much energy and creativity and optimism,” Legend said. “Being a part of that early movement was truly inspiring. That’s why it’s sad now — we did amazing things together… and even though he’s gone completely left now, I’m so glad we did what we did.”

Legend didn’t shy away from criticizing West’s recent behavior, calling his public embrace of antisemitism and anti-Black rhetoric deeply troubling. “It’s sad to see this guy, who made such beautiful art, become a force of hate and vitriol.”

He also noted that West’s behavior seemed to shift dramatically after his mother’s death in 2007, saying: “His descent started then and seems to have accelerated recently.”
