J. Cole is working on new album and wanted “90 Proof” to be on it, Smino says

J. Cole considered putting Smino’s “90 Proof” on his upcoming album

Smino dropped his new album, Luv 4 Rent, this Friday (October 28) which included the single “90 Proof,” that featured J. Cole. The St. Louis rapper recently had a conversation with Complex where he revealed that Cole is preparing his next album and initially wanted the song on it.

“For “90 Proof,” Cole just liked the song, and he asked to have it on his album,” Smino recalled. “I was like, “Shit, I don’t know. This song crazy.” And I never thought about being a songwriter, but he was like, “You keep yourself on the song, and I’ll be on it too. But I want to put it on my album.” And I was like, “aigh.”

He continued, “I thought about it and the whole time I knew it would be great for me, being on J. Cole’s album. When I was wrapping up the tracklist, though, I just felt like something was missing, and I put ‘90 Proof’ right after my intro and it just sounded like they were meant for each other.”

“90 Proof” was released on September 30 as the first single from the 31-year old rapper’s new album. Apart from Cole, Smino’s new studio effort which follows up 2020 mixtape She Already Decided, boasts guest appearances from Doechii, Fatman Scoop, Cruza, Lucky Daye, Phoelix, Cory Henry, Ravyn Lenae, Lil Uzi Vert and Reggie.

Cole released his last album, The Off-Season, in 2020. He revealed that his next body of work will be titled, The Fall Off, which is presumed to be his last release before he goes into retirement.
