Funkmaster Flex is all for Drake’s assertion that artists and labels pay cash for airplay on the radio
A buzz is being created by the music star of Drake who has filed two legal complaints against Universal Music Group for the usage of payola along streaming bots to enhance the false ranking of the diss track from Kendrick Lamar, “Not Like Us.”
Endorsing Drake’s assertions, the old-timer Hot 97 DJ said on X (formerly Twitter): “DRAKE IS 100% RIGHT! NATIONAL PLAY! (PER SONG) DRAKE DONT $ FOR PLAY!”
Flex enumerated the supposed costs of radio play: “POP/CHR RADIO: $350K. URBAN RADIO: $250K. MIXSHOW: $100K. LOCAL MIXSHOW DIRECTOR: $40K. LOCAL DJ: $3K-5K PER SONG! (DJS ON THE RADIO 5 DAYS A WEEK).”
This practice would also forceminimize independent artists into mainstream success in a way, meaning, “ALL YOU ARTIST KNOW I AIN’T NEVER TAKE A DIME FROM YOU, YOUR MANAGER, OR YOUR LABELS! (BOMB HAS NO PRICE).”
Flex went on with his rant on Instagram, and then accused some DJs of taking some money under the table through payola to play a song. “HAHAHAHA! SOME DJS BEEN TAKING PAYOLA TO PLAY SONGS! I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HOW THIS TRICKLES DOWN! (I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS),” he wrote.
