Chris Brown Settles London Assault Lawsuit, But Criminal Charges Remain

Published August 26, 2025 by

Singer still faces serious legal consequences over 2023 nightclub incident

Chris Brown has reportedly settled a civil lawsuit brought against him by Abe Diaw, who accused the singer of a violent assault in a London nightclub last year.

Court documents reveal that Diaw has voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice — meaning it cannot be refiled — a strong indication that a private settlement has been reached. Neither Brown nor Diaw have publicly commented on the matter.

Despite the civil case being dropped, the With You singer still faces criminal charges in the UK stemming from the same 2023 incident. Brown was arrested in May in Manchester and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, after allegedly attacking Diaw with a tequila bottle and stomping on his head.

Though initially denied bail, Brown was later released after posting nearly $7 million, under the condition that he reside in the UK and surrender his passport. He has been permitted to travel internationally to fulfill obligations on his Breezy Bowl tour.

Prosecutors describe the case as “extremely serious,” with CCTV footage reportedly capturing the alleged assault. During a Manchester concert, Brown broke his silence, briefly referencing his incarceration: “Thank you to the jail, y’all was really nice.”

His trial is pending as the criminal investigation continues.
